Postdoctoral Researcher (gn) Statistical topic modelling of international policies for sustainable development

Project STEPS (Sustainable Tourism Evolving Paradigms) will analyze possibilities for sustainable tourism in tropical island destinations. The project applies interdisciplinary mixed methods to identify and question possible pathways for the required paradigm shift to sustainability.

This position focuses on the initial work package in the project, to conduct statistical topic modelling on policy documents, ideally across different languages, to explore different transformational strategies for sustainable tourism.
The specific tasks of this project would consist of document selection and review, data cleaning and pre-processing, and machine learning textual analysis of the full text of policy documents. Qualitative content thematic analysis is envisioned to compliment structural topic modelling to identify strategies and thematic clusters, and analyse temporal break points and geographic trends. The Postdoc will build a database to answer research questions developed within the project, and produce at least two peer-reviewed manuscripts.

The working group Deliberation, Valuation, and Sustainability is (subject to release of funds) seeking to fill an opening for a Postdoc.

Voraussetzungen

• PhD in data science, or in any field with relevant experience
• Experience with statistical topic modelling
• Experience with natural language processing
• Experience with statistical methods and machine learning
• Ability to extract and process large numbers of documents from the internet
• Ability to work with texts in different languages
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
• Have a position-relevant peer-reviewed article (or thesis chapter or preprint article)

Desirable Qualifications:
• Familiarity with research in sustainable development or tourism contexts
• Ability to work cooperatively and constructively in a team, as well as independently
• Ability to get along respectfully with people of diverse backgrounds, and work effectively in an intercultural context

Salary will be paid according to the German TV-L (EG 13). The position is available for full-time employment starting June 1st, 2025 with a duration until May 31st, 2027.
